Jeff Watson Wins Super Late Model $2K Special at Lake Cumberland Speedway
Burnside, KY-July 28, 2012- After a couple of weeks off, racing action returned to Lake Cumberland Speedway on Saturday evening with a $2,000 to win special for Super Late Models and Jeff Watson of Campbellsville, KY would snag the biggest win of his career by taking the event win. Other feature event winners were Tommy Bailey of Corbin, KY in Modifieds, Keith Decker of Somerset, KY in Super Dirt Stocks/Sportsman, and Johnnie Adams of Somerset, KY in Front Wheel Drives.
Tim Tungate would take the lead at the drop of the green flag in the 30 lap Super Late Model main event, with Justin Rattliff, Jeff Watson, Jason Barrett, and Tommy Gregory. Tungate would pull out to a comfortable lead, while Rattliff continued in second as race leader Tungate would eventually lap up to the fifth place car. But business picked up in the waning laps of the event as Rattliff began to close in on Tungate, with the pair side-by-side entering turn one after receiving the white flag. The lead duo would make contact exiting turn two, with Rattliff climbing the wall on the backchute and Tungate ending up spun in the wrong direction to draw the caution flag, ending both drivers night. This turn of events would hand the race lead over to Watson, who would pull away from Barrett on the restart and claim the event win. Barrett would finish second, followed by Gregory, Anthony Reams, and Randy Ridner. Twelve entries saw Tungate be the top qualifier at 13.395 seconds, with Tungate and Rattliff winning the heats.
Current Modified division points leader Tommy Bailey would lead all 20 laps of the Modified feature event and hold off the late charges of Ben Petrey to pick up another win in the division aboard the Matthew and Kenneth Jordan owned Jordan Motorsports/Mac-Trac Transportation/Micro Armor Lubricants/TSM Enhancements/Wayne Bowen Racing Supply/Diamond Auto Collision/Lakeside Towing/Best Waste Services/Skillsaw Designs sponsored #17J Lightning Chassis, Niebel Race Engines powered entry. Petrey would finish second, while John Smith, Keith Denny, and Tim Patrick completed the top five. Eleven entries would see Bailey as top qualifier at 14.581 seconds, with Bailey and Smith claiming the heat race wins.
Keith Decker proved once again why he has been the man to beat in the Super Dirt Stock/Sportsman division this season as he claimed yet another checkered flag in the feature event behind the wheel of his unsponsored #2 machine. Goble Bertram would finish second, with Richard Price, Sarah Patrick, and Tim McMullin completing the running order. Five entries would see Bertram pick up the heat race victory.
