PLEASE VOTE IN MEMORY OF LINDA WALKER!!
Linda Walker, 42, passed away after suffering two and a half years with cervical cancer. The Walker family have been fans of racing for a number of years, and race dirt cars at Portsmouth Raceway Park. Her son DeRick has designed a NASCAR car and entered it into the Toyota Racing
"My mom has had cervical cancer for about two and a half years now, she just passed away last week. She fought it for a long time and it finally just got her," DeRick Walker Linda's son said. "Our whole family has been into racing, we race dirt cars at Portsmouth Raceway. My dad has raced for 20 plus years and won a few championships, the name of the cars have always been Linda's pride. She has always been the biggest race fan."
"When she (Linda) went into the hospice center two weeks ago, I seen this contest through Toyota to create a NASCAR car. I got inspired to do that for her," DeRick Walker Linda's son said.
Through the "sponsafy your ride contest" anyone can submit a design for a race car. Once the design is accepted the designer has 15 days to get people to vote for their design.
DeRick said he had only played around with the idea of the contest.
"She (Linda) got to see the car (before she passed), and she loved it. She was so sick she could not enjoy it. This car had been getting rejected and rejected throughout the whole week she was in hospice. The day she passed away the car got accepted," DeRick said.
This all happened before the family had gotten a chance to grieve.
"I struggled even doing this. I thought there is nothing mom would love more than that car to be a NASCAR. I thought I am going to do everything in my power to try to get as many votes as I can," DeRick said.
He explained that he has put it on Facebook as a reminder for people to vote for the design daily.
As for goals DeRick said he would like to see the car at least make the top ten.
"It's not just for her (Linda) it's (the designed car) for anyone who is battling cancer or for anyone who has lost someone due to cancer,"DeRick said. "We are trying to honor our my mom, but we are also trying to get the word out about fighting cancer."
